HUTCHINSON, Kan. - University of Houston junior Roman Robledo used a late surge to move into a tie for 29th place during the NCAA Championships Second Round on Saturday at Prairies Dunes Country Club.
After opening his first NCAA Championships with a 2-over-par 72, on the 6,991-yard course, the Harlingen, Texas, native stood at 3-under-par in his Second Round through 14 holes before play was suspended at 8:30 p.m., due to darkness.
Starting on No. 10, Robledo played an even-par front nine and then drained three straight birdies on Nos. 4-6 to move higher in the individual standings.
As a team, the Cougars were tied for 21st with No. 5 California and No. 29 Kentucky at 8-over-par. The 10th-ranked Cougars finished the First Round with a team score of 284 and were 4-over-par in the Second Round before Saturday's play was stopped.
Senior James Ross was tied for 54th at 1-over-par, while sophomore Vincent Martino stood in a tie for 8th at 3-over-par. Sophomore Kyle Pilgrim was tied for 135th at 7-over-par, and senior Curtis Reed was in 149th at 11-over-par.
The top eight teams after the Third Round of stroke play advance to the NCAA Championships Match Play on Tuesday and Wednesday for the team national championship. The top 40 individuals plus ties after the Third Round will compete in the final 18 holes for the individual national championship on Monday.
Overall, No. 3 Stanford held the team lead at 12-under-par, thanks to 13-under-par Second Round. No. 24 South Carolina and No. 1 Alabama were tied for second at 8-under-par with No. 23 Auburn (-6) and No. 28 SMU (275) following.
The Cardinal joined No. 2 Oklahoma State, No. 4 Georgia Tech, No. 5 California and No. 6 Georgia as the only teams complete two full rounds by the end of Saturday.
Individually, Stanford's Cameron Wilson and South Carolina's Will Starke held the lead at 6-under-par. Patrick Rodgers of Stanford and Oklahoma's Charlie Saxon tied for third at 5-under-par, while five players were tied for fifth at 4-under-par

Friday's rain played havoc with the tournament schedule. Houston teed off around 10:40 a.m., played its First Round, enjoyed a few minutes break for lunch and then turned around to start its Second Round.
The Cougars will hit the course at 7 a.m., Sunday, to complete their Second Rounds and then wait as 15 teams begin their Second Rounds. No Cougar has more than four holes to finish their Second Rounds.

With the completion of 54 holes, the top eight teams will advance to the NCAA Championships Match Play Finals, starting Tuesday morning, with the team national title at stake.
Before the team champion is crowned, the top-40 individuals plus ties at the end of the Third Round will compete in the fourth and Final Round on Monday for the NCAA individual national championship.
