AUGUSTA, Ga. - The University of Houston Men's Golf team stood in fifth place Saturday evening with a score of 571 following the first 36 holes at the 3M Augusta Invitational.
The Cougars, who are ranked No. 8 in the latest Golfstat and Golfweek polls, posted a score of 282 in Saturday's morning round and followed that with a team effort of 289. Seniors James Ross and Curtis Reed enjoyed sub-par totals through the first two rounds to stand among the tournament's top-20 leaders.
Ross opened the tournament with a 69, thanks to six birdies ,and added an even-par 72 in the afternoon session on the 7,028-yard, par-72 course at Forest Hills Golf Club to tie for ninth at 141. Reed started his day with a 70 and finished at even-par during the Second Round to tie for 15th at 142.
Junior Roman Robledo, who has won four tournaments in 2013-14, was tied for 31st at 145, while junior Kyle Pilgrim was tied for 39th at 147. Senior Wesley McClain finished the first day in a tie for 43rd at 148.
On the team side, No. 7 UCF and No. 19 Texas tied for the first-day lead at 564, while No. 13 Virginia Tech was in third at 565. No. 9 Illinois posted a score of 569 to stand in fourth place in front of the Cougars.
Individually, UCF's Greg Eason and Virginia Tech's Scott Vincent were tied for first at 7-under-par 137. UCF's Ricardo Gouveia stood in third at 138, while Thomas Detry (Illinois), Austin Eoff (Purdue), Kramer Hickok (Texas) and Kyle Jones (Baylor) were tied for fourth at 139.

For Sunday's Final Round, the Cougars will be competing in threesomes with Illinois and Baylor and start their day off No. 1. McClain will start the day at 8:20 a.m. (CDT) with Pilgrim (8:30 a.m.), Robledo (8:40 a.m.), Reed (8:50 a.m.) and Ross (9 a.m.) to follow.

Following the 3M Augusta Invitational, the Cougars will conclude their regular-season slate when they take part at the Reunion Intercollegiate, hosted by Mississippi at Reunion Golf and Country Club in Madison, Miss., on April 14-15.
