HUMBLE, Texas - For the second straight day, the University of Houston Men's Golf team posted the lowest round of the day to extend their lead following the Second Round of the Bayou City Collegiate Championship.
After firing an 8-under-par 280 as a team, the Cougars went three strokes lower on the 6,967-yard, par-72 course at Golf Club of Houston. The Cougars were steady throughout the day, posting a combined 18 birdies as a group with only seven bogeys in the round.
Every member of Houston's starting lineup shot even-par or better Saturday and finished the Second Round among the tournament's top-20 leaders. Senior Wesley McClain, junior Roman Robledo and senior James Ross each led the way with 69s, while junior Kyle Pilgrim recorded a 70. Senior Curtis Reed finished his day at even-par 72.
In addition, freshman Matt Scobie fired a 70 for the second straight day, while sophomore Vincent Martino lowered his score four strokes with a 70 of his own.
With that performance, the Cougars posted a 36-hole score of 557 to stand nine strokes ahead of No. 21 Texas. No. 29 South Carolina (571), No. 19 Arkansas (573), No. 31 Baylor (574), Louisiana Tech (576), Mississippi State (578), No. 14 USF (579), Rice (581) and New Mexico State (583) rounded out the top-10 team leaders.
Individually, McClain stood atop the leaderboard with a 36-hole score of 7-under-par 137. The Diboll, Texas, native posted four birdies on his front nine to start his round on a high note and finished with five birdies in the round. He enjoyed his best 36-hole total in his career, topping his previous low of 140 at the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate on Sept. 24, 2012.
Robledo and Ross enjoyed bogey-free rounds on the way to their 69s. Robledo drained birdies on Nos. 8, 9 and 13, while Ross took advantage of Nos. 5, 6, and 13. Robledo was tied with Louisiana Tech's Victor Lange in second place at 138, while Ross was tied for eighth at 141.
Pilgrim finished with two birdies and a bogey on his front and back nines to stand in a tie for 19th at 143, joining Reed. Playing as an individual, Scobie finished Saturday's round with a eagle and a pair of birdies and was tied for fifth at 140.
Redshirt freshman Emmett Oh was tied for 13th at 142, while senior Bryn Flanagan was tied for 56th at 149, and sophomore Blair Hamilton was tied for 76th at 153.
USF's Ryan Borg stood in fourth place at 139, while Scobie was joined in fifth place by Chad Ramey (Mississippi State) and Gavin Hall (Texas).
FINAL ROUND
Sunday's Second Round tees off at 8:30 a.m., Sunday, with a shotgun start at the Golf Club of Houston. Admission is free, and all fans are invited to attend.
McClain and Robledo will tee off No. 1 with Robledo going in the first group and McClain in the second. Ross will start his day on No. 2, while Pilgrim will tee off No. 3 Reed will be in the second group to tee off No. 4.
Among the individuals, Oh and Scobie will tee off No. 16, while Martino and Flanagan will start their day on No. 17. Hamilton will be in the first group to tee off No. 18.

UP NEXT
Following the Bayou City Collegiate Championship, the Cougars will go international when they compete at the Querencia Cabo Intercollegiate in Querencia, Los Cabos, Mexico. That tournament will be held March 2-4 at Querencia Golf Club.
From there, the Cougars will play host to the Border Olympics at Laredo Country Club in Laredo, Texas, on March 14-15.
