SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Sophomore Emily Gilbreth posted a score of 220 to lead three Cougars among the top-7 leaders and help guide the University of Houston Women's Golf program to a second-place team finish at the Jim West Challenge.
Gilbreth was steady throughout the three rounds, never shooting higher than 74. She drained a pair of birdies in Monday's Second Round on the way to a 73 and sank four birdies in the afternoon session on the way to another 73 to finish a career-best fourth.
Her final standing topped her previous best of 12th at the Sam Houston State/Harold Funston Invitational on Oct. 7-8, 2013.
"Emily was solid. She has been playing great but got sick and sat out last week," second-year head coach Gerrod Chadwell said. "She has been working hard. There wasn't one thing she did better than another. She just played solid all week on a tough course."
Junior Raegan Bremer and freshman Megan Thothong each posted scores of 223 to tie for seventh with both players enjoying sub-par final rounds. After enduring a 77 in Monday's Second Round, the Anaheim, Calif., native connected on four birdies to shoot a 1-under-par 71 and posted her second top-10 showing in the last three tournaments.
Thothong posted a Final-Round 70 for the Cougars' lowest score of the tournament. Starting on No. 8, the Dallas native sank birdies on No. 11 and No. 13 but suffered through three bogeys in a four-hole stretch to close out the back nine.
However, Thothong rallied impressively to sink birdies on three of her final seven holes and surge in the final standings.
"Megan and Raegan always handle their business," Chadwell said. "The numbers they turned in were huge rounds."
Texas A&M won the team championship with a score of 886 to finish six strokes ahead of the Cougars Texas Tech (893), Kent State (900) and Wisconsin (906) rounded out the top-10 team leaders.
The tournament was originally scheduled for 54 holes over three days, but the threat of rain Tuesday prompted officials to play the final 36 holes Monday. Despite the change and cool, windy conditions, the Cougars played solid consecutive rounds to post the best finish in team history.
It topped the team's third-place showing at the Old Waverly Bulldog Invitational on Oct. 20-22.
"The course was playing hard, and it was windy and cool, so we knew today was going to be a long day. They handled the adversity," Chadwell said. "It was a total team effort. I was just really proud of the way they competed and embraced the challenge of the day."
Senior Courtney Ferguson tied for 33rd with a score of 233 and provided an exciting highlight in the morning round with a hole-in-one on the 148-yard, par-3 11th hole, a first in Houston Women's Golf history.
"No. 11 was one of the hardest holes out there. Players were putting off and across the green, so the best thing to do was hole it out and not try to putt on it," Chadwell said. "Courtney hit a 7-iron that never left the flag. We heard screaming, and it was pretty cool to see it from the tee box.
Freshman Yuka Kajiki tied for 45th at 235, while freshman Courtney Tibiletti, competing as an individual, tied for 67th at 250.
Kent State's Wad Phaewchimplee was the only player to finish below par, earning medalist honors at 2-under-par 214. Texas A&M's Maddie Szeryk finished second at 216, while Texas Tech's Kimmy Hill placed third at 219.
UP NEXT
With the conclusion of the Jim West Challenge, the Cougars wrap up their fall season. Houston won't return to tournament action again until it competes at the Texas State Spring Challenge on Feb. 15-16 at Landa Park in New Braunfels, Texas.
"The fall season ended at the right time. We have played three weeks in a row, and we have a bunch of young kids that are experiencing this for the first time," Chadwell said. "I am encouraged by their competitiveness and how hard they are competing, but there is still so much room for growth and improvement. We're looking forward to the off-season, getting rested and getting on top of our school work."
