BRYAN, Texas - Battling through cool, windy, rainy conditions, the University of Houston Men's Golf program posted a team score of 285 to build a 5-stroke lead after the first day at the Miramont Invitational.
Five Cougars stood among the top-10 individual leaders, led by freshman Michael Perras, who fired an opening round 70 to stand in second place on the 7,174-yard, par-72 course at Miramont Country Club.
While the teams were scheduled to play 36 holes Monday, the wet weather forced the cancellation of one of the first two rounds. The tournament was shortened to 36 holes with the final 18 holes slated to begin with an 8 a.m., shotgun start Tuesday.

Co-host Sam Houston State stood in second place at 290, while Texas State was in third at 296. UTSA (297), UT Arlington (299), Southeastern Louisiana (299), Louisiana-Lafayette (300), McNeese State (301), Columbia (301) and co-host Rice (302) rounded out the top-10 team leaders.
Starting on No. 3, Perras endured a rough start, bogeying three of his first five holes. However, the Deer Park, Texas, native rallied impressively, draining birdies on four straight holes from No. 9 to No. 12. After five straight pars, he sank his fifth and final birdie of the round on the 508-yard, par-5 18th hole.
Perras stood just one shot back of Louisiana-Lafayette's Louis Kelly, who opened the tournament with a 69.
Senior Kyle Pilgrim stood in a tie for third place with a 71, thanks to a round, which featured three birdies. The Colleyville, Texas, native led the Cougars in the team's last tournament, tying for sixth at the Wolf Run Intercollegiate.
Pilgrim joined Sam Houston State's Zach Cabra, Texas State's Torbjorn Johansen and McNeese State's Robert MacIntyre in third place.
Junior Vincent Martino and senior Roman Robledo were tied for eighth with even-par 72s. Martino birdied three of his final 10 holes, while Robledo posted a pair of birdies in a round that saw 14 pars.
Playing as an individual, sophomore Emmett Oh was tied for third with a 71 with three birdies. Junior Blair Hamilton was tied for 19th with a 74, while sophomore Matt Scobie and freshman Papito Gonzalez - making his collegiate debut - were tied for 28th after shooting 75s.
For Tuesday's Final Round, the Cougars will compete as a team in threesomes with Sam Houston State and Texas State. Pilgrim will tee off in the first group off No. 1, while Perras will be in the second group off No. 1. Martino will start his round off No. 2, while Hamilton and Robledo will tee off No. 3.
On the individual side, Oh, Scobie and Gonalez will compete with student-athletes from Rice and Louisiana-Monroe. Oh will tee of No. 11, while Scobie will be in the second group off No. 13 with Gonzalez starting his day off No. 14.
UP NEXT
Following the Miramont Invitational, the Cougars will close out their fall season when they compete at the Baylor Intercollegiate at Royal Oaks Country Club in Dallas on Oct. 27-28.
