Houston - The University of Houston swimming and diving team fell in a dual meet to the University of the Incarnate Word, 124-117, Saturday afternoon at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center.
"I'm really happy with how we raced today," head swimming coach Rich Murphy said. "I give credit to the University of the Incarnate Word for a good meet. The divers did a really great job on the boards going first, second and third. They continued their outstanding performances."
Sophomore Taylor Olanski supplied Houston's win in the 3-meter diving competition (290.48) and was followed by teammates Micaela Bouter (266.08) and junior Danielle Shedd (258.08). In the 1-meter dive the Cougars cleaned up with Shedd taking first (310.73) followed by Olanski (295.51) and Bouter (283.06).
"We had a huge meet today from Mackenzie Alspaugh. She won two events and had a tremendous split on her relays. We also had a great showing from Maya Owens and Victoria Padial, great efforts from those girls."
Alspaugh captured two first place finishes, 500-Yard Freestyle (5:11:26) and 400 Yard Individual Medley (4:39:12). Senior Maya Owens finished first in the 100 Yard Butterfly (58.15) and Victoria Padial took first in the 1000-Yard Freestyle (10:40:17).
The Cougars take to the waters next against rivals Rice Owls on Oct. 16 at home.
"We know Rice really well," said Murphy. "We know that they always come in ready to swim. Every time we race them they're prepared. We need to bring our A game for this meet."
