SUGAR GROVE, Ill. - Although scores rose Saturday during the second round of the Northern Intercollegiate, the 17th-ranked University of Houston men's golf team expanded its lead to five shots.
The Cougars tied for the second-best team round of the day with a score of 293 and posted a 36-hole total of 572 to stand five strokes ahead of Liberty and eight strokes in front of Virginia. Despite tougher conditions on the 7,236-yard, par-72 course at Rich Harvest Farms, Houston Director of Golf Jonathan Dismuke said his team handled the day well.
"We did a good job, because today was much tougher," Dismuke said. "It was windier, and the hole locations were in some difficult places. We extended our lead, and that was our main focus coming into the round. I am proud of the guys."
Sophomore Roman Robledo surged into the individual lead with a score of 6-under-par 70 after shooting a 70 in Saturday's second round. After starting his day on No. 1 with a bogey, the Harlingen, Texas, native played steady golf the rest of the round with three birdies and 14 pars.
Robledo, who won the 2013 Conference USA individual championship, stood one stroke ahead of Kentucky's David Snyder and three strokes in front of Liberty's Niklas Lindstrom.
"The golf course was very demanding, but Roman hit so many quality shots. He drove ball well and seemed to always be in fairways," Dismuke said. "His approaches were well struck, and ball ended up in the right position."
Robledo was part of a solid team effort from the Cougars with four student athletes among the tournament's top-20 individual leaders. Junior Curtis Reed - who has competed in every team-scoring event for the Cougars during the last three years - was tied for fourth at 2-under-par 142 after finishing Saturday's round with a 70.
The Castroville, Texas, native birdied his last two holes and finished with only two bogeys in the round.
Sophomore Blair Hamilton stood in a tie for 13th at 145, while senior Wesley McClain was tied for 19th at 147. Other Cougars in action were sophomore Vincent Martino (t-51st, 154) and freshman Matt Scobie (84th, 168), who was making his collegiate debut.
After Virginia, UCF (583), Kentucky (589), Ball State (595), UT Arlington (599), Indiana (603), Ohio State (607), St. Mary's (Calif.) (608) rounded out the top-10 team leaders.
