BATON ROUGE, La. - The University of Houston Men's Golf team completed its 2012-13 season with a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional after posting a team score of 300.
Seeded No. 5 at the Regional, the Cougars competed among the top-five team leaders for most of Saturday's Final Round but struggled on the final three holes, posting a combined score of +8 during that stretch. Houston tied with No. 47 South Alabama with that 54-hole total.
It was the Cougars' second straight appearance at the NCAA Regionals. A year ago, Houston finished ninth at the NCAA Athens Regional.
Junior Curtis Reed was the team's leading competitor, tying for 12th overall with a score of 5-over-par 221 on the 7,436-yard, par-72 course at The University Club. Sophomore Kyle Pilgrim - competing in his first NCAA Regional - posted the team's lowest round of the day with a 74 and tied for 14th at 222.
Freshman Vincent Martino tied for 30th at 227, while junior Wesley McClain tied for 37th at 229. Sophomore Roman Robledo, the 2013 Conference USA individual champion, tied for 45th at 231.
No. 2 Alabama won the team title with a score of 868, while No. 10 Florida finished second at 874. No. 17 LSU (890), No. 38 Tennessee (892) and No. 50 Coastal Carolina (894) also earned bids to the NCAA Championships, scheduled for May 28-June 2 at the Capital City Club in Atlanta.
South Alabama's Tyler Klava posted a score of 218 and defeated Georgia State's Jonathan Gray in a playoff to finish as the Regional's top individual not on a qualifying team. Klava also will compete at the NCAA Championships later this month.
