HUNTSVILLE, Texas - University of Houston sophomore Matt Scobie stood in a tie for fifth place Monday evening with a score of 1-under-par 141 following the first day of the Sam Houston State Harold Funston Invitational.
Competing on the 6,943-yard, par-71 course at Raven Nest Golf Club, Scobie opened the tournament with a 71 and then followed that with a 70 on the way to a career-best 36-hole total. He was tied with Oral Roberts' Scott Newell with his 36-hole total.
Redshirt freshman Emmett Oh stood in a tie for 16th place at 145 and fired an even-par 71 in the afternoon session.
The final round tees off with an 8:30 a.m., shotgun start Tuesday. Scobie will tee off with the first group off No. 18, while Oh will follow in the second group on the same hole.
With only two student-athletes competing, the Cougars were not eligible for the team title. Host Sam Houston State held the team lead with a score of 559 to stand 14 strokes ahead of Abilene Christian. Oral Roberts (580), Stephen F. Austin (588) and Tyler Junior College (588) rounded out the top-five leaders.
Individually, Sam Houston State held three of the top four places. Zach Cabra stood atop the individual leaderboard at 136, one stroke in front of teammate Albert Miner and two strokes better than Abilene Christian's Corbin Renner.

Following the Sam Houston State/Harold Funston Invitational, the Cougars will take several months off from their schedule before opening the spring season on Feb. 21-23 at its own Bayou City Collegiate Championship at Redstone Golf Club.
