HOUSTON - Strong defensive effort helped the University of Houston volleyball team to knock off second place UCF in a three set sweep (25-23, 31-29, 25-20) Friday evening during the annual Coogs for the Cure match.
The Cougars (13-9, 5-2) held the Knights (13-6, 4-2) to just 42 kills and a .173 hitting average.
Both teams battled in set two, taking it to extra points. The Knights took the lead (23-24) for the eighth time of the set, but Houston responded with a kill by Cortney Warren. The teams went point-for-point until the Cougars took a 30-29 lead. Set two ended on a bad set from the UCF setter, and Houston went up 2-0 heading into intermission.
Houston returned to the court with determination in their eyes. The Cougars front line of defense held UCF's leading outside hitter, Angelica Crump, and middle blocker, DeLaina Sarden, to negative hitting percentages in the final set.
Three Cougars reached double figure kills against UCF. Freshman Sarita Mikals led the team with 15 kills (.302) and 12 digs, recording her eighth double-double of the season. Warren followed with 12 kills and two blocks, while outside Kadi Kullerkann recorded 11 kills and a .350 hitting percentage.

Houston returns to the courts on Sunday when they host South Florida at 1 p.m. The Cougars then travel to Dallas for a match against SMU on Oct. 25.
