After second-round play was suspended due to darkness, the Cougars returned to the 7,305-yard, par-72 course Sunday morning to complete that round. Although the Cougars were at 7-under-par as they began the day, the team gave away a few shots but still managed to post a second-round total of 285 - the third-lowest second-round score.
"We finished the second round poorly and gave some shots away," head coach Jonathan Dismuke said. "We were always in touch with a good final round but weren't able to get closer. This was the strongest field against which we competed to this point in the season."
Junior James Ross overcame a tough first round to shoot a second-round 69, the Cougars' best round of the tournament. The Edinburgh, Scotland, native finished in a tie for 35th with a score of 218.
In the final round, sophomores Curtis Reed and Jesse Droemer each posted sub-par rounds to lead the Cougars to their team total. Reed earned his best finish of the season with a 13th-place showing, Lowering his score with each round, the Castroville, Texas, native shot a 70 in the final round and finished at 214.
Like Reed, Droemer bettered his score with each round and tied for 21st at 216, The Sealy, Texas, native ended his tournament with a 2-under-par 70 on Sunday.
"Curtis had a great event. He had two nice rounds to finish the tournament," Dismuke said. "Jesse was always in touch with a good score all three rounds."
Other Cougars in action were freshmen Roman Robledo (t-44th, 220) and Kyle Pilgrim (t-59th, 223).
UNLV captured the team title with a score of 844, seven strokes ahead of Texas Tech. Auburn (855), Saint Mary's (Calif.) (861), SMU (862) and Texas A&M (862) rounded out the top-six team leaders.
