HOUSTON - Freshman Roman Robledo and sophomore Jesse Droemer stood among the top-seven individual leaders to lead the University of Houston golf team to a third-place showing following the first day of the Rice Intercollegiate at Westwood Country Club on Monday.
Playing under overcast skies and cool temperatures, the Cougars posted back-to-back team rounds of 291. Houston finished the first day with a score of 582, six strokes behind first-day leader Northwestern and three strokes back of Florida Gulf Coast. Wichita State (583) and Louisiana Tech (583) rounded out the top-five team leaders.
"I saw a lot of improvement from our opening round last week. We hit the ball better and we took advantage of some of the scoring opportunities," third-year head coach Jonathan Dismuke said. "However, We need to clean up our rounds a bit. We are giving away too many shots away and not converting as much as I would like. If we can do that Tuesday, we have a chance to win, and that's all you can ask for after a 36-hole day."
The final round tees off at 8 a.m., Tuesday. Fans can follow live scoring by visiting GolfStat.com or by clicking here.
Robledo, a freshman out of Harlingen, Texas, posted the team's lowest score of the day with a first-round 69 and stood in a tie for fifth with a 36-hole score of 1-under-par 143 on the 7,184-yard, par-72 course. Robledo began his day with back-to-back birdies and posted only one bogey through his first 18 holes to tie for the second-lowest score of the day.
Making his spring debut, Droemer shot the team's lowest score in the afternoon session with a 1-under-par 71 and finished the day at 144 to tie for seventh. The Sealy, Texas, native was steady throughout the second round, recording two birdies with only one bogey to damper his round.
Both of those guys played really well. Anytime you have a good team performance, you have to have guys with solid individual performances. I am very proud of those guys," Dismuke said. "James, Kyle and Curtis also pitched in with some good rounds. Hopefully, we can come out Tuesday and have a really good day."
Junior James Ross, who also was making his spring debut, posted an even-par 72 in the afternoon round and was tied for 32nd at 148.
Other Cougars in action were sophomore Curtis Reed (t-46th, 150), freshman Kyle Pilgrim (t-46th, 150) - who was making his collegiate debut - and sophomore Wesley McClain (t-57th, 151), who competed as an individual.
On the individual leaderboard, Northwestern's Eric Chun and Air Force's Kyle Westmoreland were tied for first at 141. New Mexico State's Zachary Fullerton and UTSA's Ryan Werre were tied for third at 142, while Missouri State's Jordan McLaurin joined Robledo at 143.
