MISSOURI CITY, Texas - Competing in its final fall tournament of the season, the University of Houston Golf team put four players among the top-12 leaders following the first day of the HBU Husky Invitational.
Freshmen Andrew Ertel and Vincent Martino posted identical scores of 145, including rounds of 72 in Monday's afternoon session on the 6,931-yard, par-70 course at Quail Valley Golf Club.
Fellow freshman Blair Hamilton posted the Cougars' lowest score of the day with an opening-round 70 but slipped into a tie for 12th with a score of 146. Junior Bryn Flanagan also was tied for 12th at 146.
With only four student-athletes competing as individuals, the Cougars did not register a team score in the day's final standings. The tournament wraps up with the final 18 holes Tuesday morning.
Host Houston Baptist leads the team standings with a score of 570, while Sam Houston State and Florida Atlantic were tied for second at 581.
Florida Atlantic's Clint Wilhelm leads all players with a score of 138 after consecutive rounds of 69. Houston Baptist's Andy Ariens and Albert Miner of Sam Houston State were tied for second at 140, while Mason Seaborn (Louisiana-Monroe) and Jeffrey Merrell (Houston Baptist) were tied for fourth at 142.
UP NEXT
With the end of the Lone Star Invitational, the Cougars will conclude their fall season. Houston returns to action on Feb. 22-24 when it teams with Rice to play host to the Redstone Collegiate Championships, held at Redstone Golf Club.
