"There were so many positives through a tough weekend. We played 20 players in each game. Those numbers create depth, competition and a sense of team," said head coach Susan Bush on facing No. 10 Duke and No. 1 North Carolina. "The two games were a learning experience for us, and will lend to an overall successful season."
There was plenty of action early as UNC capitalized off an early opportunity when Kelly McFarlane scored the first goal of the match off a corner kick crossed into the box by Megan Brigman in the eighth minute. Houston then answered with a goal from senior forward Jessica Zavalza in the 14th minute. Zavalza was assisted on the equalizer by freshmen Alexis Weaver. The assist was the first of Weaver's career.
Kaelia Ohai fired a shot into the top right corner giving UNC its second goal of the half and that proved to be the gamewinner as the Cougars were unable to overcome the No. 1 ranked Tar Heels.
North Carolina would add another goal in the first half before matching its scoring output in the second half of play to leave Cougars with a, 6-1, defeat.
