Golf Moves to 11th Place at Jim West Intercollegiate

VICTORIA, Texas -The University of Houston golf team bettered its first-round score by 17 strokes Monday to move into 11th place following the second round at the Jim West Intercollegiate at Victoria Country Club.
After shooting a disappointing 314 in Sunday's opening round, the Cougars rebounded to post a team score of 297 on the 6,870-yard, par-72 course. Houston was one of 10 teams to better its first-round score and showed the second-biggest improvement on the day, trailing only Cal State Fullerton's 19-shot improvement.
Freshman Jesse Droemer moved into the top-20 individual leaders after leading the Cougars with a 2-under-par 70 on Monday. The Sealy, Texas, native improved by nine strokes from his opening round and stood in a tie for 19th place at 149.
Other Cougars in action were freshman Curtis Reed (t-34th, 151), freshman Bryn Flanagan (t-57th, 156), junior Eric Adler (t-57th, 156), freshman Wesley McClain (t-74th, 160) and sophomore Joseph Reynolds (t-62nd, 157), who competed as an individual.
Both Adler and Reynolds made their season debuts for the Cougars at this event.
Louisiana Tech maintained the team lead with a score of even-par 576, two strokes ahead of Southeastern Louisiana and 12 strokes better than College of Charleston. UT Arlington (590), Texas State (5906), Stephen F. Austin (596), Louisiana-Lafayette (596), South Alabama (601), UTSA (602) and Sam Houston State (605) rounded out the top 10 leaders.
Individually, Sam Forgan of Louisiana Tech and Southeastern Louisiana's Philipp Westermann were tied for the lead at 6-under-par 138. That duo joined UT Arlington's Wes Worster (-4) as the only players below par through 36 holes.
The final round begins at 8:30 a.m., Tuesday. This will be the Cougars' final non-conference competition before the 2011 Conference USA Championship on April 24-26.
