LAFAYETTE, La. - After struggling through its first round of the day, the University of Houston golf team rallied with an impressive effort to move up four places and stand in 10th place following the first day of the Louisiana Classics on Monday.
Working their way through an opening-round 300, the Cougars bettered their score by nine strokes in the final 18 holes of the day to make their move on the leaderboard at the 6,898-yard, par-72 course at Oakbourne Country Club.
"We got off to a very poor start due to a little bit of nerves," head coach Jonathan Dismuke said. "However, the guys settled down after the first round, and we started playing our game.
Making his spring debut, freshman Jesse Droemer used steady play as he has all season to stand in a tie for seventh place with a score of 142. The Sealy, Texas native posted a 2-under-par 70 - his team-leading sixth sub-par round of the season - in the morning session and followed that with an even-par 72 in the afternoon round.
In the early round, Droemer jumped out to a quick start with birdies on three of his first five holes and capped his round with another birdie to lead the Cougars.
Freshman Curtis Reed showed the biggest improvement of the day and stood in a tie with teammate Bryn Flanagan for 35th place at 148. After shooting an 80 in the morning round, the Castroville, Texas, native bettered his score by 12 strokes for a career-low 68, the Cougars' lowest round of the 2010-11 season.
Reed opened his afternoon round with a birdie on the par-4 eighth hole and added six more birdies to tie for the third-lowest round of the tournament.
Other Cougars in action were freshman Wesley McClain (t-71st, 154) and sophomore transfer Will Dusenbury (t-82nd, 158).
LSU and Illinois were tied for the team lead at 570, while Kent State stood in third place at 573. Host Louisiana-Lafayette (577) and Texas State (578) rounded out the top-five team leaders.
Kent State's John Hahn stood atop the individual leaderboard with a score of 136 after firing a 66 in Monday's afternoon round. Illinois' Chris DeForest was in second place two strokes back, while LSU's Andrew Loupe and Memphis' Carlson Cox were tied for third at 140.
The final 18 holes begins with a 7:30 a.m., shotgun start Tuesday.
