LAREDO, Texas - Four University of Houston golfers posted even-par rounds of 72 to move the Cougars into 15th place following the final round of the Border Olympics at Laredo Country Club.
Freshmen Bryn Flanagan, Curtis Reed and Wesley McClain joined with sophomore newcomer Will Dusenbury to lead the Cougars in the final round.
After double-bogeying his second hole of the day and bogeying three of the next four holes, McClain birdied five of six holes during one stretch and then drained pars the rest of the way for his final-round score.
The Cougars improved their team score for the third straight round, shooting a final-round 288 on the 7,319-yard, par-72 course at Laredo Country Club, and finished with a 54-hole total of 879.
"I was pleased with the way that we improved our score with each round," head coach Jonathan Dismuke said. "This certainly wasn't our best effort, but we will regoup and learn from the lessons this week and try to carry that into next weekend's tournament."
Arkansas captured the team championship with a final-round team score of 279. The Razorbacks finished five strokes ahead of Oklahoma and 14 strokes better than Baylor. Rice (848), Liberty (853), New Mexico State (854), Indiana (856), North Texas (857), Lamar (862) and Wichita State (863) rounded out the top-10 team leaders.
Rice's Michael Whitehead earned medalist honors after shooting a dazzling 62 in the final round to finish two strokes ahead of Arkansas' Sebastian Cappelen. Whitehead posted 10 birdies in the round without a bogey for the top spot in the final individual standings.
New Mexico State's Timothy Mikkelsen and Baylor's Joakim Mikkelsen tied for third at 205, while New Mexico State's Gaston De La Torre finished fifth at 206.
