GOODYEAR, Ariz. - Freshman Wesley McClain fired a 3-under-par 69 for the second straight day to move into the top-20 individual leaders and helped lead the University of Houston golf team to a ninth-place finish Saturday at the Desert Shootout.
With his final-round score, McClain tied his season low and recorded season personal bests with his 36- and 54-hole totals.
As a team, the Cougars posted a score of 283 to finish ninth. Although Houston gained only one place in the final standings, the Cougars tied for the third-lowest round of the day on the 7,015-yard, par-72 course at Palm Valley Golf Course.
"Today was quite a bit better. This was, by far, our best round, and I was very pleased with the guys," head coach Jonathan Dismuke said following the round. "We just need to get off to better starts. If we can get off to better starts, we are going to be very competitive in some tournaments."
Three other Cougars fired par or better during the final 18 holes. Freshman Curtis Reed posted a 70 on Saturday and tied for 62nd with a score of 220. Freshman Bryn Flanagan (214) and sophomore transfer Will Dusenbury (217) each posted 70s to tie for 28th and 47th, respectively.
