HOUSTON - The University of Houston volleyball team put together a complete team effort to knock off East Carolina, 3-1, (23-25, 25-19, 25-15, 25-22) Saturday afternoon at Minges Coliseum.
"A lot of people stepped into multiple roles that they are comfortable with but also some roles that were new to them," head coach Molly Alvey said. "Kadi (Kullerkann) came in and did an amazing job off the bench. She's had limited playing time lately but played a lot today, and she did a very nice job."
Senior Lucy Charuk led the offensive effort with 21 kills on 30 attempts for a .633 hitting clip and added four blocks. Junior Chandace Tryon finished with 14 kills, one shy of her career-high, and freshman Kullerkann turned in a career-high 13 kills.
"Lucy had an amazing game," Alvey added "She was unstoppable. We put the ball in her hands at every opportunity, and every time it touched her hands, it was a kill. Chandace had a nice match. She was attacking really well. We have been working on her spacing, and she executed that really well and that allowed her some scoring opportunities."
Freshman Caitlin Ogletree tallied a game-high 56 assists, and senior Ingrida Zauere led the defensive effort with a season-high 21 digs.
"Defensively, Ingrida kept the ball alive for us to go on multiple point runs," Alvey said.
After dropping the first set 25-23, Houston bounced back to win the next three to improve to 11-5 on the season and 4-2 in Conference USA play.
In the second set, Houston opened to a 13-8 lead, forcing the Pirates to call a timeout. East Carolina scored the first three points out of the break and pulled within two, 16-14, of the Cougars but Houston held off ECU to even the match with a 25-19 win.
With the match tied 1-1, Houston jumped out to the early 14-11 lead in the third set and never looked back. Houston closed out the match on a 5-0 run with four of the points coming from Kullerkann kills.
In the final set, East Carolina took the early 7-3 lead but Houston answered with a 6-0 run to regain the lead 9-7. The Pirates rallied to tie the set 12-12, but Houston held on and ended the match with a 25-22 win.
