After two battles in the opening sets, the Cougars jumped out to a 12-4 lead in the third set and never looked back. They built a 19-11 lead and closed out the set on a 6-1 run to win, 25-12.
Trailing 17-13, Houston put together a 5-0 run to steal an 18-17 lead in the fourth set. They traded points with the Mustangs before a kill by Courtney Manning and an attack error by Charuk gave SMU a 22-20 advantage. Houston would win the next point with a Norris kill but three-straight kills by SMU's Jessica Oliver gave the Mustangs a 25-21 win.
With the match tied, 2-2, Houston was forced to put its 2-0 record in five set matches on the line.
Despite trailing early, the Cougars knotted the set 8-8, forcing SMU to call a timeout. Out of the break. SMU answered with a 5-1 run to take a 13-9 lead, prompting Houston to call a timeout.
