HOUSTON - Senior middle blocker Lucy Charuk had 23 kills to guide the University of Houston volleyball team to a 3-1 (22-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-23) win over UCF Sunday afternoon at the Athletics/Alumni Center. The Cougars improved to 14-5 on the season and 7-2 in Conference USA play. Charuk's 23 kills came on 41 attempts to finish with a .512 hitting percentage. Junior Katie Norris added 18 kills and seven digs, while junior Chandace Tryon had 12 kills and four digs. Freshman Caitlin Ogletree finished with 58 assists and senior Ingrida Zauere had a team-high 15 digs.
"We've been working on a couple of things in practice differently to help Lucy get open on her shots and to adjust differently," head coach Molly Alvey said. "She is doing a great job of executing and it has created a lot of opportunities for her."
UCF jumped out to a 5-0 lead to open the match, forcing the Cougars to call a timeout. Houston came back to within one, 10-9, but the Knights would build on their lead, 20-16. UH put together a 4-0 run to tie the score 20-20, but a 4-2 run by the Knights set up UCF set point. A kill by Angelica Crump on the next play gave UCF a 25-22 win.
Despite the first set loss, Charuk finished with eight kills on 11 attempts, giving UH a 17 to 15 kill advantage over the Knights.
With the score tied 16-16 in the second set, Houston put together a 7-0 run to take a 23-16 lead. Despite allowing the Knights to battle back to within two, 24-22, a Charuk kill ended the comeback and gave UH a 25-22 win, evening the match 1-1.
Charuk continued her offensive dominance with 10 kills on 14 attempts in the second set to give her 18 kills after two sets of play.
After opening the third set to a 14-7 lead, Houston allowed the Knights to within three, 18-15, forcing Alvey to call a timeout. The Cougars traded points out of the break before taking the next four points to lead, 24-16. A kill by UCF's Delaina Sarden extended the match, before a Norris kill gave UH a 25-17 win.
The Cougars struggled early in the fourth set but were able come back and tie the score, 14-14. After taking a 15-14 lead on the next play, Houston extended its lead, 18-15. After allowing the Knights to within two, 23-21, late in the set, Houston called a timeout. Off the bench, Tryon had two kills to secure the 25-23 Cougar win.
