HOUSTON - The University of Houston swimming team finished 1-1 on the weekend after the Cougars picked up a win in their first-ever meeting against the University of Arkansas-Little Rock Saturday, 113-77.
Freshman Emma Nelson led the way on Saturday, as she collected her first two collegiate wins against the Trojans. Junior Kim Eeson also had a pair of wins as six different Cougars notched individual victories during the dual. The Trojans do not have a diving team, so the swimmers went solo to claim the victory.
Houston jumped out to a hot start, plowing through the first seven events with victories in each. Eeson, junior Beccy Hillis, junior Natalie Newcomb and senior Andrea Kells kicked off the meet with a win in the 200-yard medley relay (1:50.87).
Nelson claimed her first win of her career in the 1,000-yard freestyle, swimming a personal best in the event (10:48.23). Sophomores Reka Kovacs and Moira Fraser went first-second in the 200-yard freestyle. Kovacs swam a personal best time of 1:55.90, and Fraser was right behind her at 1:56.66.
Eeson clocked in one-tenth of a second shy of her career best in the 50-yard freestyle, but her time of 23.95 was still fast enough to clinch the Cougars' fourth-straight event win.
Swimming the 400-yard IM for the first time in a collegiate meet, freshman Laykin Lowry showed no signs of inexperience as she flew past the competition to take first place (4:36.98). Sophomore Holli Pisarski and freshman Leah Sanchez also tried their hand at the event and found success, finishing fourth and fifth, respectively.
For the second night in a row, Eeson walked away with two event wins. Her second against the Trojans came in the 100-yard butterfly when she took first place with a time of 58.24. Freshmen Heather Winn and Marissa Blumenthal also posted strong swims in the event, tapping in at fourth and fifth place.
Stretching the event-win streak to seven was sophomore Kimmy Ballo who claimed the win following her 55.19 performance in the 100-yard freestyle. Newcomb displayed her strength with a personal best in the event (56.30) to finish second.
The 100-yard backstroke marked the only event the Cougars didn't win on Saturday, but Fraser and Hillis nearly made up the difference by scoring in second and third place, respectively. Hillis even locked down a PR in the race (1:02.53).
Nelson righted the ship when she picked up her second win of the meet in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:24.57. Kells followed suit to notch the final individual victory in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:09.21).
Houston wrapped up a nearly perfect night with a win from its 200-yard freestyle relay team. Fraser, Pisarski, Ballo and Kovacs earned first place honors with their time of 1:41.46.
The Cougars are in action again next weekend when they travel to Baton Rouge, La., to face LSU, Rice and Tulane on Jan. 28-29.
