New Orleans, La. - The University of Houston volleyball team lost its Conference USA road opener Saturday afternoon against Tulane 3-1 (17-25, 25-18, 29-31, 21-25) at Fogelman Arena.
With the loss, Houston falls to 6-8 on the season and 0-2 in league action.
Three Cougars recorded double-digit kills against the Green Wave. Lucy Charuk led all players with 15 kills on a .481 hitting percentage. Chandace Tryon and Ingrida Zauere added 14 and 10 kills, respectively. Zauere also tallied 13 digs for her third double-double this season.
UH dug itself a deep hole to open the match, falling behind 9-1, but they would continue to battle and eventually force a Tulane timeout, trailing 19-10. Houston would come off the bench and outscore the Green Wave 7-5 for the remainder of the first set, but the deficit would be too much to overcome and the Cougars would drop the set 25-17.
Houston scored the first three points of the second set before allowing the home team to come back and tie the score at 9-9. But this time the momentum was in the Cougars' favor and they would eventually regain the lead, 20-14, before evening the match 1-1 with a win.
The third set would go to extra points as neither team was able to put together any sort of lead, but it would be the Green Wave that would come out on top 31-29.
With a fourth set in front of them, Houston needed to record a win to extend the match. It looked as though the might do so, taking a 13-11 lead and forcing a Tulane timeout. But Tulane would come off the bench and tie the score 19-19 and eventually pulling ahead to win the set, 25-21.
Houston will be back on the court for a second match against Tulane at 1 p.m. Sunday.
