HOUSTON - The University of Houston golf team will face some of the nation's top collegiate programs across the country during the 2010-11 season, which officially tees off in late September.
Head coach Jonathan Dismuke, now in his second season, unveiled the 2010-11 schedule Monday afternoon. The schedule features three events during the fall season and seven regular-season tournaments in the spring.
The Cougars will move across the nation this season, from Indiana in the Midwest, to Goodyear, Ariz., in the West to Augusta, Ga., in the East. The extensive travel plans were part of Dismuke's thoughts when compiling this year's slate.
"With the new structure of NCAA Regionals, it was very important for us to get into different parts of the country," Dismuke said. "Golf in Texas is not the same as it is on the West Coast or the East Coast or in the desert."
In addition to competing at courses across the country, Dismuke looked to better the schedule from a year ago, and the 2010-11 schedule accomplished that feat.
"We wanted to upgrade and play against some of the better teams in the nation at some of the better events," Dismuke said. "We were very successful in building a solid schedule for where we are."
THE FALL SCHEDULE
The season begins Sept. 27-28 when the Cougars take part at the Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic in South Bend, Ind.
From there, the team leaves the country to compete at the Cabo Collegiate at Querencia Golf Club in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico on Oct. 2-4.
The Cougars then end the fall campaign in a Texas shootout at the Lone Star Invitational. For the second straight season, Houston will face collegiate teams from across the state on Oct. 17-18 at Briggs Ranch Golf Club in San Antonio, Texas.
THE SPRING SCHEDULE
After taking more than four months off, the Cougars open the 2011 spring season but won't need to leave the city limits. Houston joins crosstown- and Conference USA-rival Rice at the Rice Intercollegiate at Westwood Country Club on Feb. 21-22.
The month of March will be a busy one for the Cougars, who will compete four times. The month starts March 7-8 at the Louisiana Classics at Oakbourne Country Club in Lafayette, La., and continues March 11-12 at the Seminole Intercollegiate in Tallahassee, Fla., at Southwood Country Club.
From there, the schedule continues at the Desert Shootout in Goodyear, Ariz., on March 17-19 before Houston plays host to the Border Olympics at Laredo Country Club in Laredo, Texas, on March 25-26.
The Cougars visit the home course of defending NCAA national champion Augusta State when they compete at the Administaff Augusta State Invitational on April 2-3 at Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Ga. The regular season wraps up April 11-12 at the Jim West Collegiate at Victoria Country Club in Victoria, Texas.
THE POSTSEASON
Following the regular season, the Cougars compete at the 2011 Conference USA Championships on April 24-26 at Texarkana Country Club in Texarkana, Texas. The winner of the league's annual postseason event earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals.
