HGA Eddie Burke Sr. Young Houstonian Final Results
HOUSTON - University of Houston sophomore Jordan Rumora captured the individual championship at the Houston Golf Association Eddie Burke Sr. Young Houstonian on Friday to lead a pack of Cougars at Memorial Park Golf Course.
Competing on the 7,165-yard, par-72 course, Rumora fired a 1-under-par 71 in Friday's final round to finish the 54-hole event at 1-under-par 215. He took advantage of the par-5 holes throughout the final 18 holes to win the title. After recording a par on the first hole, he played the final three par-5s at 4-under-par.
Overcoming back-to-back bogeys on the fifth and sixth holes, the Houston native birdied the par-5 eighth hole. Following four straight pars, Rumora eagled the par-5 13th hole and added another birdie on the 16th hole to emerge as the only golfer to finish below par for the tournament.
This was only the latest in a string of success for Rumora this summer. He and his father Craig recently won the title at the State Father-Son Championship at Miramont Country Club in Bryan, Texas.
"Obviously, I am proud of Jordan for his performance at the tournament," Houston head coach Jonathan Dismuke said. "He has had a really good summer and put together three really solid rounds this week."
Rumora made his collegiate debut with the Cougars in 2009-10 out of Cy-Fair High. The Houston native competed in seven tournaments and fired a career-low 68 in the second round of the Husky Invitational on Oct. 18, 2009.
He posted a 70 in the second round of the Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic on the way to a career-best 10th place finish in his first collegiate event in early October 2009.
Rumora was one of five Cougars to compete in the tournament. Sophomore Joseph Reynolds finished at 219 to place fourth, while signee Jesse Droemer tied for 14th place with a score of 223. Redshirt freshman Jes Schneider posted an even-par 72 in the final round to finish in 16th place at 224, and senior A.J. Ferries placed 28th with a score of 229.
"We have a lot to look forward to in 2010-11," Dismuke said. "Everyone coming back has a year of experience. We are going to be more talented, and we have the potential to do some really special things."
Making his collegiate debut in 2010-11, Reynolds competed in eight tournaments and enjoyed a career-best 10th-place finish at the Cougars' own Redstone Challenge. He also posted a career-low 69 in the second round of the Administaff Augusta State Invitational on April 3.
Droemer, a native of Sealy, Texas, signed with the Cougars in November 2009. He is ranked among the top-100 junior golfers nationally and was named the 2007 and 2008 Houston Golf Association Player of the Year.
Schneider joined the Cougars at the semester break in 2010 and did not compete during the spring season.
A year ago, Ferries made his collegiate debut, competing in three tournaments, which included a 12th-place finish at Houston's own Redstone Challenge.
