Golf Adds Two More Signees on Tuesday

HOUSTON - As the University of Houston golf team prepares for the 2010 Conference USA Championships next week, head coach Jonathan Dismuke announced the addition of two players who recently signed National Letters of Intent.
South Africa native Bryn Flanagan and New York product Greg Schmaus will join the Cougar program in the fall of 2010. Both players will compete as freshmen during the 2010-11 season.
Flanagan's and Schmaus' signings pushes the Cougars' signing class to five. Jesse Droemer, Curtis Reed and Wesley McClain inked with the Cougars in November.
"My No. 1 goal was to have a group talented enough to compete right away at the NCAA Division I level. I wanted to surround myself with similar work ethics, and I am going to be challenged to outwork these guys," Dismuke said. "Academically, they are very sound. They simply have all the pieces of the puzzle."
BRYN FLANAGAN
Flanagan joined the Cougars after an award-winning prep career in his native South Africa.
As a Junior Golf competitor, he was a member of the South African Junior Elite Squad in 2006 and won the Krugersdorp Junior Open Tournament. He also was the runner-up at the South African Boys Under-18 Championship and was selected for the Central Gauteng National IPT Under-19 Tournament.
As an amateur, Flanagan finished fourth at the Northern Amateur Tournament in 2009 and placed second at the South Africa Amateur Stroke Play Championship. He also rose as high as No. 7 in the South Africa National Amateur rankings.
"The more I looked into Bryn, his results and the progress he made during the last couple of years, the more I was impressed. Everyone I spoke with about Bryn gave him glowing recommendations," Dismuke said. "He is going to add some diversity to our team and allow us to be much more talented from the start."
The son of Noel and Jacqueline Flanagan, he is expected to major in business.
GREG SCHMAUS
Schmaus enters the Cougar program after an award-winning stint at the Hank Haney International Junior Golf Academy. He attended high school in New Jersey as a freshman and sophomore and was an All-Ivy League selection in soccer as a freshman.
In addition, he was an IJGT All-America First Team, All-North Jersey First Team and All-County First Team honoree.
Following his sophomore season, he transferred to the Haney IGJA and attended Heritage Academy for his final two seasons of high school.
Schmaus (whose name is pronounced Shmouse) worked closely with Haney and coaches Peter Krause, Matt Fields and Stephen Thomson at the IJGA. Since moving to the IJGA, he made the cut at a Hooters Tour Carolina Winter Series event, finishing seventh.
He also set a course record with a final-round 66 at the IJGT at Tradition National and was a first alternate for the U.S. Junior Amateur as a freshman.
In 2008, he was selected as a member of the Mizuno North America Cup Team and qualified for the New Jersey Open.
"Greg came with a lot of high recommendations," Dismuke said. "He has a great work ethic, is a very strong player, has great fundamentals and simply will be a great asset to our program."
The son of Peter and Phyllis Schmaus, he also was recruited by NC State, Kentucky, Kansas, Nevada, UT Arlington and Washington State.

The Cougars open play Sunday at the Conference USA Championship at RedTail Golf Club in Orlando. The 54-hole event wraps up Tuesday afternoon.
