LAFAYETTE, La. - The University of Houston golf team struggled during its final round Tuesday at the 25th annual Louisiana Classics and fell to 12th place in the team standings.
A day after shooting one of their best team rounds of the season, the Cougars posted a team score of 309 in the final round on the 7,141-yard, par-72 course at Oakbourne Country Club an finished the 54-hole event with a score of 896.
Tuesday's final round marked the end of a busy stretch for the Cougars. After playing 54 holes at the Border Olympics on Friday and Saturday, the Cougars traveled east on Interstate 10 to compete at the Louisiana Classics. That meant 108 holes of golf during a 5-day stretch in two locations more than 500 miles apart.
"We have a pretty big learning curve, but we must step up if we are going to compete at tournaments," Houston first-year head coach Jonathan Dismuke said. "We got off on another poor start and just couldn't recover from there."
Individually, senior Jackie Lindsey fired a 74 for the third straight round and tied with teammate Matt Eschenburg for 28th with a score of 222. Other Cougars in action included junior Clark Mitzner (223, t-35th); sophomore Eric Adler (233, t-73rd) and senior Beau Davis (234, t-75th).
LSU won the team championship with a score of 864 after posting a 292 during the final round. Illinois finished second at 866, while Tulsa placed third at 871. Southeastern Louisiana (881) and Memphis (882) rounded out the top-five team leaders.
LSU's Andrew Lonpe won medalist honors after firing a 67 for the second straight round and finishing at 208, one stroke ahead of Illinois' Scott Langley. New Orleans' Ken Looper finished third at 21, while Southern Miss Paul Apyan and Southeastern Louisiana's Philipp Westermann tied for third at 214.

After returning home, the Cougars take a break before hitting the road again to compete at the Squire Creek Intercollegiate - hosted by Louisiana Tech - at Squire Creek Golf Club on Monday and Tuesday.
