Golf Finishes 14th at Border Olympics

LAREDO, Texas - The University of Houston golf team posted a final-round score of 314 Saturday morning to finish 14th with a total of 917 at the Border Olympics.
Unfortunately, the Cougars posted their worst round of the tournament in the final round on the 7,241-yard, par-72 course at Laredo Country Club to slip a little lower in the final standings. After the event, Houston first-year head coach Jonathan Dismuke said he was frustrated with his team's performance.
"We didn't do a good job improving on those things that we identified we needed to do to be successful," Dismuke said. "We continued to drive the ball out of play and continued to make mistakes around the green. You are not going to play well when you combine errors like that."
Senior Jackie Lindsey finished with a 54-hole score of 227 to lead the Cougars and tie for 41st place. Other Cougars in action included junior Matt Eschenburg (230, t-55th), junior Clark Mitzner (233, t-63rd), senior Beau Davis (235, t-70th), sophomore Eric Adler (237, t-74th) and freshman Jordan Rumora (239, t-78th).
Texas State won the team championship after firing a team score of 295 in the final round to a two-day score of 876. The Bobcats finished for strokes ahead of Oklahoma and five better than Lamar. UT Arlington (882) and Auburn (883) rounded out the top-five team leaders.
Individually, Baylor's Joakim Mikkelsen overcame a final-round 75 to finish at 213, two strokes ahead of Auburn's Kyle Kopsick and three strokes better than Auburn's Will McCurdy.

There will be little rest for the weary as the Cougars head east to Louisiana to compete at the 25th annual Louisiana Classics at Oakbourne Country Club. The 54-hole event tees off Monday morning on the 7,141-yard, par-72 course.
The Cougars join a competitive field, which features Colorado, Illinois, Kansas, LSU, Memphis, SMU, Southeastern Louisiana, Southern Miss, Texas State, Tulsa, UAB, UALR, New Orleans and host Louisiana-Lafayette.
The tournament starts with 36 holes Monday, beginning with an 8 a.m., shotgun start. The final 18 holes tees off at 8:30 a.m., Tuesday.
"This gives us an opportunity to right our wrongs," Dismuke said. "Good teams follow up bad performances with good ones, so I am anxious to see what we do from here."
