Golf Falls to Second Place at Cabo Collegiate

CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico - Despite improving on its first-round score, the University of Houston golf team fell to second place Sunday following the second round of the Cabo Collegiate.
The Cougars, who were in first place after the first 18 holes, actually bettered their team score by a stroke during the second round and finished with a 36-hole total of 585. However, No. 23 Arkansas fired a team score of 8-under-par 280 to grab the team lead at 577 on the 7,070-yard, par-72 course at Querencia Golf Club.
"We were a little sloppy out there," second-year head coach Jonathan Dismuke said. "Although our score was better, we lost some ground to the field. We need to narrow our focus and minimize our mistakes in the final round."
SMU (590), Oregon State (593), UC Irvine (595), Cal State Northridge (597), UT Arlington (598), Pacific (606) and Lamar (606) rounded out the top-10 team leaders.
Freshmen Jesse Droemer and senior Matt Eschenburg were tied for ninth place at 146. Freshman Curtis Reed made the biggest move of the day, firing a 3-under-par 69 to move into a tie for 22nd place at 150. The Castroville, Texas, native started the day in a tie for 49th place.
With an even-par 72 Sunday, freshman Bryn Flanagan rebounded from a first-round 78 and move into a tie for 22nd place.
Freshman Wesley McClain was in a tie for 4th place with a two-day score of 155.
"I was very proud of Curtis' and Bryn's performance," Dismuke said. "They really stepped up after both struggled in the first round."
SMU's Kelly Kraft fired a 7-under-par 65 Sunday and led the individual leaderboard at 7-under-par 137, five strokes ahead of UC Irvine's Bryan Harris and six strokes ahead of three other players.
