HOUSTON - The University of Houston volleyball team opened the weekend with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-22) sweep of Marshall Friday night at the Cam Henderson Center.
With the win, the Cougars improved to 14-10 on the season and 8-4 in Conference USA play.
Lucy Charuk led UH in the win over Marshall with 13 kills and three blocks. Ingrida Zauere added eight kills and 20 digs while Amber Brooks had 30 assists.
"Winning on the road is always a difficult task," head coach Molly Alvey said. "Tonight we played well as a team, communication was sharp and we played our game plan extremely well."
"Our middles, Lucy (Charuk) and Chandace (Tryon), did an excellent job of making themselves available in transition, which opened up the entire offense for us. Overall, our offensive system sharpened up tonight. We got better tonight by finishing the match in three sets."
After opening the match to a 9-5 Houston lead, the Thundering Herd was able to pull within three at 17-14 before Houston called its first timeout. Out of the break, the Cougars went on a 6-1 run and went on to win the match following a Marshall service error.
The second set proved to be a much closer battle than the match began. The two teams played to a 13-13 tie before the Cougars benefited from a Marshall attack error and timeout. Off the bench, the two teams continued to trade points before Houston was able to capitalize on three UH kills and an attack error by Marshall's Desirre Wilkerson. Holding a 24-21 lead, and for the second-straight match, an error by a Marshall player gave the Cougars a win.
"We discussed after set two what we needed to do in order to improve and finish," Alvey added. "We did accomplish those things as discussed and I am very proud of every single one of them. They continue to impress me on a daily basis."
Going into the final set of the night, Houston continued to control the momentum of the match. They took an early 15-13 lead, forcing Marshall to call a timeout. Following the break, UH continued to hold the lead going into match point. Holding the 24-22 lead, Marshall's Elizabeth Herman capped the game with an attack error.
