Swimming and Diving Holds Intrasquad Scrimmage

HOUSTON - The University of Houston swimming and diving team kicked off the 2009-10 season Wednesday afternoon with a Timed Trial Season Opener. The annual intrasquad scrimmage was scheduled to mark the opening of a new season each fall at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Natatorium.
"Our goal today was to get up and race so we are prepared for our dual meet next weekend," head coach Mark Taylor said. "We have some good teams coming and we have to be ready to compete at a high level. Our girls proved that they are ready to race."
Seven events highlighted the afternoon's meet. Each swimmer swam up to three events and one relay. The divers also held a exhibition competition. A 10-minute break also followed each event.
Action began at 3 p.m. with the 200-yard freestyle. Sophomore Kim Eeson led all swimmers finishing with a time of 1:53.86. Freshman Christine Salinas (1:57.73) and sophomore Beccy Hillis (1:59.15) round out the top three. Eeson followed up the first event with a win in the 100-yard butterfly, coming in with a time of 59.68. Freshman Reka Kovacs and junior Andrea Kells finished in second and third with a 59.89 and 1:00.35 time, respectively.
Competition continued with the 100-yard backstroke, with senior Jessica Shamburger taking top honors (58.81). Finishing second was Kovacs with a time of 1:00.82 and Hillis followed in third with a time of 1:01.35.
The divers did a combination of all three events, the 1-meter, 3-meter and platform. The event was not scored.
Following a break for the diving event, Hillis won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:05.92. Kovacs notched her third second place finish with a time of 1:07.18 and freshman Holli Pisarski was third with a time of 1:09.44.
The final individual event of the afternoon featured the 200-yard IM. The two lone competitors in the event, Kells and sophomore Rachel Holcomb, finished first(2:22.11) and second(2:32.53), respectively.
The scrimmage concluded with the 300-yard freestyle relay. The winning team of Salinas, Hillis and Pisarski took top honors with a time of 2:46.93.
Houston will be back in the pool on Oct. 9-10 for the Phill Hansel Duals Weekend. Action on Oct. 9n begins at 5 p.m. and will continue at 10 a.m. on Oct. 10. Teams scheduled to compete at the meet include Rice and Florida International.
