LAWRENCE, Kan. - Despite its their best team round of the tournament, the University of Houston golf team was unable to move higher in the standings during the final day of the Kansas Invitational.
The Cougars posted a team score of 298 Tuesday morning but remained in seventh place with a 54-hole-total of 902 when each of the six teams ahead of them posted lower scores.
Individually, junior Matt Eschenburg tied for 14th with a score of 222, while senior Jackie Lindsey tied for 22nd at 225. Other Cougars in action were senior Beau Davis (t-25th, 226), junior Clark Mitzner (t-42nd, 231) and redshirt freshman Joseph Reynolds (t-61st, 236), who was making his collegiate debut.
Oklahoma won the team championship with a score of 886 to finish two strokes ahead of Kansas, Missouri, Louisiana-Lafayette. Illinois State (890) and Nebraska (895) rounded out the top-six team leaders.
Kansas' Nate Barbee fired a 4-under-par 68 in the final round to win the individual title with a score of 5-under-par 211, three strokes ahead of Missouri's Jace Long.
The Cougars return to action Oct. 5-6 when they compete at the Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic on the Warren Golf Course in South Bend, Ind.
