LAWRENCE, Kan. - The University of Houston golf team stood in seventh place Monday following the first day of the Kansas Invitational.
Competing on the 7,058-yard, par-72 course at Alvamar Golf Club, the Cougars rallied at the end of Monday's first round to shoot a team score of 305 and posted a mark of 299 in the afternoon session for a 36-hole total of 604.
The Cougars battled the elements early in the day. After practicing for the last three weeks in typical hot, muggy Houston weather, the Cougars faced temperatures in the upper 40s with a strong wind blowing as they started their day.
"The first round was a shock to our system. This was the first cool weather we played in, and it shocked the guys some," said head coach Jonathan Dismuke, who was making his debut as the UH head coach. "However, we finished well, and everybody made a couple of birdies coming in to salvage the round. We did some good things down the stretch."
Missouri stood atop the team leaderboard at 589, while Oklahoma and Louisiana-Lafayette were tied for second at 591. Kansas (596), Illinois State (599) and Nebraska (600) rounded out the top-six team leaders.
Individually, junior Matt Eschenburg led the Cougars with a two-round score of 148, firing a 1-over-par 73 in the first round. Senior Jackie Lindsey was tied for 19th at 149 after shooting a 73 in the afternoon round.
Other Cougars in action were senior Beau Davis (t-30, 152), redshirt freshman Joseph Reynolds (t-48th, 156), who was making his collegiate debut, and junior Clark Mitzner (t-50th, 157).
Missouri's Jace Long was the individual leader at 2-under-par 142. Kansas' Nate Barbee and Illinois State's Tommy Bliefnick were tied for second at 141, while Louisiana-Lafayette's Philipp Fendt and Eric Meier of Illinois State were tied for fourth.
The tournament wraps up with the final 18 holes at 8:30 a.m., Tuesday.
"We are in a good position," Dismuke said. "With a good round Tuesday, we have a chance to move up."
This was the Cougars' first appearance at the Kansas Invitational since 2007. UH was scheduled to compete in the fall of 2008 but was forced to cancel due to Hurricane Ike.
