LAWRENCE, Kan. - The University of Houston golf team opens its fall season Monday morning when it competes at the Kansas Invitational.
The 54-hole event begins with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m., Monday, on the 7,058-yard, par-72 course at Alvamar Golf Club. The Cougars will play 36 holes Monday and wrap up the tournament with the final 18 holes Tuesday morning.
The Cougars are one of 14 teams in the field, which includes Idaho, Illinois State, Louisiana-Lafayette, Marquette, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oklahoma City, Seton Hall, South Dakota, UMKC and Western Kentucky.
The tournament marks the debut of head coach Jonathan Dismuke, who joined the Cougar program during the summer. The Mississippi native previously served as an assistant coach at Auburn and helped lead Texas A&M to the 2009 NCAA national championship.
"I am excited about us having an opportunity to compete, and I'm looking forward to evaluating the guys under the pressure of tournament," Dismuke said. "I am still new to this team and just trying to learn as much as I can about these guys.
Jackie Lindsey returns for his senior season and is the only three-year letterman on this year's team. The Houston native posted a 74.7 scoring average to rank second among the Cougars and was one of only two players to compete in all 10 tournaments.
Matt Eschenburg competed in all but one tournament a year ago and ranked third on the team with a 75.3 scoring average.
Clark Mitzner, who was named the chair of the Conference USA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee during the summer, posted a 76.9 scoring average in eight tournaments a year ago and fired a career-low 69 in the second round of the Rice Intercollegiate to open the spring season.
Beau Davis competed in six tournaments a year ago, finishing with a 77.7 scoring average.
Freshman Joseph Reynolds will compete in his first tournament as a Cougar after sitting out the 2008-09 season as a redshirt.
For our first two tournaments, we played as many rounds as possible to get as much separation as possible," Dismuke said. "The five players who are going separated themselves from the rest of team. I like this team we have going. It's a more experienced group with a lot of upperclassmen."
This will be the Cougars' first appearance at the Kansas Invitational since 2007. UH was scheduled to compete in the fall of 2008 but was forced to cancel due to Hurricane Ike.
