HOUSTON - Eleven tournaments, including four fall events, highlight the University of Houston golf team's 2009-10 schedule, first-year head coach Jonathan Dismuke announced Thursday afternoon.
Although he has been on the job for only a few months, Dismuke was happy with the way that the entire schedule came together for his squad.
"I am pleased overall with the schedule," Dismuke said. "We are going to compete on some great courses."
The Cougars open the fall season on Sept. 28-29 when they compete at the Kansas Invitational in Lawrence, Kan. From there, the team returns to action Oct. 5-6 at the Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic in South Bend. Ind.
From there, fans of Cougar golf in the state of Texas will have plenty of opportunities to see their favorite team in action. The Cougars will compete in the Lone Star State in five tournaments this season, including the final two of the fall slate.
UH will take part at the Lone Star Invitational - featuring only Texas teams - on Oct. 18-19 at Briggs Ranch Golf Club in San Antonio before closing out the fall Oct. 26=27 at the Husky Invitational at Sienna Plantation Golf Club in Missouri City,
The spring season opens at the Rice Intercollegiate on Feb. 15-16 at Westwood Country Club and continues with the J.L. Lewis Intercollegiate on Feb. 22-23 at Wolfdancer Golf Club in Lost Pines. The Texas tour wraps up with the Border Olympics at Laredo Country Club on March 5-6 in Laredo.
"The main thing we want do is reconnect with some of the former fans and generate a fan base," Dismuke said. "Part of my mindset in scheduling was to play in Texas as much as possible to get in front of as many fans as we can."
Following the trip through Texas, the Cougars compete at the Louisiana Classics on March 8-9 in Lafayette, La., and then play at the Squire Creek Intercollegiate on March 15-16 in Ruston, La.
The Cougars open the month of April at the Administaff ASU Invitational on April 3-4 in Augusta, Ga., and take part at the Robert Kepler Invitational on April 10-11 in Columbus, Ohio to wrap up the regular season.
For the second straight season, UCF will play host to the Conference USA Championship at RedTail Golf Club in Orlando, Fla., on April 25-27. The winner of the league's annual postseason event earns a bid to the NCAA Regional, scheduled for May 20-22.
The 2010 NCAA Championships will be held June 2-5 on the Honors Course in Chattanooga, Tenn.
