WALLACE, N.C. - The University of Houston golf team fired its best round of the tournament to finish 12th at the River Landing Intercollegiate on Saturday afternoon.
Starting the day in a tie for 14th place, the Cougars posted a team score of 291 to move into 12th place on the par-72, 6,942-yard River Course at the River Landing Country Club. The Cougars finished the 54-hole event with a score of 894.
Duke posted a team score of 280 in the final round to overtake host NC State and win the team championship with a score of 14-under-par 850. NC State (856), Wake Forest (860), Michigan (862), Virginia Tech (864), Tulsa (865), Memphis (877), Virginia (878), East Carolina (881) and North Carolina (884) rounded out the top-10 team leaders.
Individually, junior Jackie Lindsey fired a 73 during the final round to tie for 26th place with a score of 218 and finish as the Cougars' leading performer.
Other Cougars in action were sophomore Clark Mitzner (224, t-53rd), senior captain Ben Moser (227, t-60th) - who fired a 3-under-par 69 Saturday for the Cougars' best round of the tournament - senior captain Brady Shivers (230, t-68th) and sophomore Matt Eschenburg (230, t-68th)
This was the Cougars' final regular-season tournament before opening play at the 2009 Conference USA Championship on April 19-21 in Orlando.
NC State's Matt Hill fired a 68 in the final round to earn medalist honors at 10-under-par 206, while Duke's Matthew Pierce finished a stroke back. Michigan's Alexander Sitompul and Maryland's John Popeck tied for third at 2111.
