WALLACE, N.C. - The University of Houston golf team stood in a tie for 14th place Friday after the first day of the River Landing Intercollegiate.
The Cougars fired an opening-round team score of 297 and followed that with a 306 in the afternoon session for a 36-hole total of 603 on the par-72, 6,942-yard River Course at the River Landing Country Club.
Host NC State stood atop the team leaderboard after the first day with a score of 563 with Duke following at 574. Wake Forest (574), Michigan (577), Tulsa (579), Virginia Tech (581), North Carolina (589), East Carolina (591) and Virginia (594) rounded out the top-10 team leaders.
Individually, junior Jackie Lindsey posted a 2-under-par 70 in the first round and finished the first day at 145 to stand in a tie for 20th place. Other Cougars in action were sophomore Clark Mitzner (150, t-46th), sophomore Matt Eschenburg (154, t-63rd), senior captain Brady Shivers (155, t-67th) and senior captain Ben Moser (158, t-76th).
NC State's Matt Hill stood in first place at 6-under-par 138, while Duke's Matthew Pierce was a stroke back. NC State's Brad Revell and Darren Blair were tied for third at 140.
Saturday's final round begins at 6:30 a.m. (CDT).
This is the Cougars' final regular-season tournament before opening play at the 2009 Conference USA Championship on April 19-21 in Orlando.
