Golf Signs Three During Early Period

HOUSTON - The University of Houston golf team grew a little bigger Thursday with the signing of three players to National Letters of Intent, head coach Jonathan Dismuke announced.
Curtis Reed, Jesse Droemer and Wesley McClain will join the Cougars as freshmen during the 2010-11 season. They make up the first signing class under Dismuke, who was excited about the newest members of his program.
"I wanted to bring in some consistency and bring in young men who have had success at national level," Dismuke said. "All three have won AJGA events at the national, state and local levels. It's important to have players that have competed at a high level and been able to win individually."
JESSE DROEMER
Droemer brings an impressive resume to the Cougar program. Currently ranked among the top-100 junior golfers in the country, Droemer was the 2007 and 2008 Houston Golf Association Player of the Year.
With three birdies on the back nine in the final round, he captured the AJGA Arkansas Junior at Blessings individual title in July and was honored as the Golfweek Player of the Week
A native of Sealy, Texas, and the son of Bill and Patricia Droemer, he expects to major in sports administration.
"Jesse typically plays very well on hard courses," Dismuke said. "He is going to be a great player, week in and week out, and he has the ability to compete on championship-style courses."
WESLEY McCLAIN
A product of Diboll High, McClain was a four-year letterman for head coach Jeff Stifle.
He captured the 2009 AJGA Heritage Junior championship with 69s in the first and final rounds and was a two-time District champion. McClain finished third at the 2009 AJGA Stars of Texas Junior and Texas State Junior tournaments and qualified to compete for the Houston teams that faced the Scottish squad in Aberdeen, Scotland during the summer of 2007.
McClain, who is the son of Jim and Judy McClain, also earned numerous academic awards, ranking No. 5 in his graduation class and serving as the president of his school's National Honor Society.
"Wesley has a lot of speed, hits the ball a long way and has won on some good courses," Dismuke said. "He is just a good competitor and is very smart."
CURTIS REED
Reed, who currently is ranked No. 5 in the Polo World Golf rankings in the state of Texas for 2010 graduates, joined the Cougars after an award-winning career at Medina Valley High in Castroville, Texas. As a freshman, he helped lead the Panthers to the Class 3A state championship and finished as the Class 3A Regional and State individual champion.
The two-time defending District 29-4A individual champion, he was named to the Greater San Antonio Golf Super Team for the last three seasons and was recognized as the Greater San Antonio Junior Golfer of the Year in 2007.
Reed also earned honors in the classroom during his prep career. He was a member of the National Honor Society and earned the Academic Excellence Award for three straight years.
The son of Laura and Bruce Reed, he is expecting to study in the Bauer College of Business as an entrepreneurship/marketing major.
"Curtis believes in his ability, and he believes he is going to be a great player," Dismuke said. "He is going to great ambassador for the University of Houston. He is a guy who never meets a stranger and is going to promote our program and the University very well."
ABOUT THE COUGARS
The Cougars wrapped up their fall season by winning the Husky Invitational at Sienna Plantation Golf Club in late Octobers. Houston opens the spring campaign Feb. 15-16 when it competes at the Rice Intercollegiate at Westwood Country Club in Houston.
