MISSOURI CITY, Texas - A day after rain forced the postponement of the first and second rounds, the University of Houston golf team responded with two solid rounds Tuesday to win the shortened Husky Invitational at Sienna Plantation Golf Club.
Senior Jackie Lindsey won the first collegiate tournament of his career, posting a two-round score of 1-under-par 143 to finish one stroke ahead of teammate and fellow senior Beau Davis and Rice's Tommy Mitchell.
The Houston native and Jersey Village High product posted a career-best 68 in the opening round to set the tone for his day.
After completing only their first eight holes on Monday before rain forced a postponement, the Cougars finished that round and posted a team score of 285 on Tuesday morning to grab the early lead. It was the team's lowest round of the fall season.
The Cougars struggled at times during their afternoon round but rallied down the stretch for a team score of 293 to post a 36-hole total of 578, eight strokes ahead of ULM. Oklahoma Christian (593), Nicholls State (598) and East Central (601) rounded out the top-five team leaders.
"It's always tough to play a few holes, step away for a delay and then come back," said head coach Jonathan Dismuke, who earned the first team title of his young career. "This was a much better performance than last week and just a great way to end the fall season."
A week ago, the Cougars finished 12th at the Lone Star Invitational in San Antonio, Texas.
Tuesday's title marked the 363rd team tournament championship in school history but the first since the 2007-08 team won the Kansas Invitational during the second tournament of the fall season.
Lindsey was part of a dominating Cougar lineup that saw its top-four players finish among the tournament's top-seven individual leaders. Davis posted back-to-back par rounds to finish at 144 and tie for second place, while junior Matt Eschenburg recorded a score of 145, including a 71 in the final round, to tie for fourth place.
Junior Clark Mitzner shot a 1-under-par 71 in the morning session and finished at 146 to tie for seventh place.
Other Cougars in action were junior A.J. Ferries (151, t-27th), freshman Jordan Rumora (148, t-16th), redshirt freshman Joseph Reynolds (150, t-23rd) and sophomore Eric Adler (153, t-33rd).
"We really came out well and finished out well," Dismuke said. "We did a much better job of controlling the things that we had control of."
