MISSOURI CITY, Texas - The University of Houston golf team wraps up its fall season when it begins competition Monday morning at the Husky Invitational at Sienna Plantation Golf Club.
The Cougars are part of a field, which includes Drake, McNeese State, UTPA, Louisiana-Monroe, Nicholls State, Centenary, East Central, Oklahoma Christian and host Houston Baptist on the par-72, 7,115-yard course.
Play begins at 7:30 a.m., shotgun start each day.
The Cougars enter the tournament after finishing 12th at the inaugural Lone Star Invitational last week. For first-year head coach Jonathan Dismuke, returning to the competitive course after a disappointing week is the best medicine for his squad.
"The big thing we are working towards is consistency. We had some decent finishes this semester, but we let ourselves down last week," Dismuke said. "We want to finish the fall season off and give ourselves some momentum heading into the spring."
Eight Cougar players will compete at the Husky Invitational. Junior Matt Eschenburg leads the Cougars with a 75.33 scoring average, while seniors Jackie Lindsey and Beau Davis rank 2-3 in that category.
That Cougar threesome are the only players to have competed in every tournament to date.
Junior A.J. Ferries - who made his collegiate debut last week - and fellow junior Clark Mitzner also are expected to play for the Cougar lineup.
Freshman Jordan Rumora, redshirt freshman Joseph Reynolds and sophomore Eric Adler will compete as individuals for the Cougars with Adler making his season debut.
Although Houston is not hosting the tournament, the program may as well be with the course's location to the campus and the team's familiarity with it, Dismuke said.
"Playing here in Houston will definitely be good for the guys. We have a lot of family and fan support here," Dismuke said. "Even though we are not hosting it, it's just like having a home event."
Following the Husky Invitational, the Cougars will take a lengthy break from their schedule and won't return to action until Feb. 15-16 when they open the spring season at the Rice Intercollegiate.
