SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The University of Houston golf team stood in 11th place Sunday following the first day of the Lone Star Invitational.
Competing on the 7,247-yard, par-72 course at Briggs Ranch Golf Club, the Cougars posted a team score of 308 in the morning round and bettered their afternoon session by strokes.
Unfortunately, that improvement was not enough to move closer to the team leaders. No. 18 Texas A&M stood atop the team leaderboard after the first day with a team score of 566, 10 strokes ahead of No. 4 Texas.
"Bottom line, we didn't execute very well and lost our composure. We never had an opportunity to compete for the tournament," said first-year head coach Jonathan Dismuke. "We got out of the gates slowly and really struggled."
No. 42 Baylor (577), No. 31 SMU (584), UT Arlington (585), Lamar (587), Sam Houston State (588), host UTSA (598), No. 32 Rice (599) and Texas State (599) rounded out the top-10 team leaders.
Individually, senior Jackie Lindsey led the Cougars with a two-round score of 151 to stand in a tie for 32nd place, while junior A.J. Ferries - making his collegiate debut - was in a tie for 34th with a score of 152. After shooting a 77 in the morning, Ferries settled down to post a 1-over-par 73 in the afternoon round, the Cougars' best score of the day.
"A.J. had a really nice second round," head coach Jonathan Dismuke said. "This was his first collegiate tournament, and he improved a lot from his first round."
Other Cougars in action were senior Beau Davis (t-37th, 153), junior Matt Eschenburg (t-51st, 156) and freshman Jordan Rumora (t-57th, 161).
Individually, Texas A&M's John Hurley led after 36 holes with a score a 9-under-par 135. SMU's Kelly Kraft was second at 136, while Texas' Dylan Frittelli placed third at 138.

"The mark of a good team is how they come back from poor play," Dismuke said. "We are going to make a few adjustments and get our attitude better for Monday and look for a good round."
From there, the Cougars wrap up their fall schedule when they compete at the Husky Invitational, hosted by Houston Baptist, beginning Monday at Sienna Plantation Golf Club.
