HOUSTON - Freshman Ingrida Zauere and sophomore Lucy Charuk combined for 22 of the Cougars 44 kills as the University of Houston volleyball team swept Memphis, 3-0 (25-18, 25-13 and 25-15) Friday night at the Athletics/Alumni Center.
Zauere recorded a game-high 12 kills and 11 digs for the fourth double-double of her career. Charuk added 10 kills and five blocks. Senior Kelsey King notched a game-high 33 assists.
Houston trailed early in the first set but managed to battle back to tie the score, 6-6. The two teams would continue to trade points before the Cougars managed to put together a 5-0 run to pull ahead, 15-10. The run prompted a timeout from the Memphis bench. Out of the break, Memphis was able to pull within three, 17-14, but UH continued their momentum, stretching its lead to 21-15 forcing another Tiger timeout. This time Houston was able to maintain their momentum winning the set, 25-18.
The two teams battled point for point in the early plays of the second set. Houston then went on to score three-straight points to push their lead to 9-5 and the Memphis bench quickly called a timeout. UH came off the bench to outscore the Tigers 9-4 to take an 18-9 lead and the Tigers were forced to call another timeout. But the Cougars would go on to win the set, 25-13.
Sophomore Amanda Carson guided the Cougars to the second set win recording four service aces in a row, extending her season total to 40. She needs just four more aces to break into the UH single season Top-10.
The Cougars jumped out to an early lead in the third set, scoring two quick points to open play. UH went on to mount a 21-12 lead before the Tigers would try and regroup with a timeout. After the Cougars scored the first point of the break, Memphis responded scoring two points of their own forcing head coach Bill Walton to call the team's first timeout. The Cougars came out of the break strong scoring three of the next four points to win the set, 25-15.
The win improves Houston to 16-11 overall this season and 8-6 in conference play. The Cougars are also 8-5 this season in three-set matches.
