HOUSTON -- The University of Houston volleyball team fell to New Mexico State Sunday to close out the Houston Invitational. The Aggies won in four games with scores of 30-20, 30-20, 30-21 and 30-26 at the Athletics/Alumni Building.
This was the third straight loss for the Cougars (1-3) as they looked to rebound after losing in three games to No. 6 Texas on Friday night.
With the loss the Cougars fall to 4-4 in the all-time series with the Aggies.
It was a tight battle early in game one but a 9-1 run by New Mexico State forced Houston to battle back from a 10-3 deficit and they were never able to recover losing 30-20.
Game two was Houston's game. After tying it up early at two all, Houston went on a 12-4 run to spread their lead, 14-6, but three quick points by the Aggies forced head coach Bill Walton to call a timeout.
The timeout proved to be just what Houston needed. They would go on a 10-4 run after the break to jump ahead, 24-14, and eventually winning the game, 30-20.
UH again took an early 10-5 lead in game three but it wasn't enough as the Cougars fell 30-21.
Game four was a close one to the end with eight lead changes and 11 ties but it was not enough for UH as they came up short once again, 30-26.
Freshman Robin Fitzgerald continued to be a solid contributor for Houston, notching 16 assists in game one and 44 on the afternoon. In her two starts at the Houston Invitational, Fitzgerald recorded 72 combined assists.
Leading the way for New Mexico State was Alyssa Gintant and Krystal Torres with 47 assists and 23 digs, respectively.
Houston will be at home again Sept. 5 when they play host to Cal State Bakersfield at 7 pm. They will then travel to UT-San Antonio on Sept. 6 before taking part in the Century Tell Premier Tournament in San Marcos, Texas Sept 7-8.
