Cougars Finish 14th At Louisiana Classics Golf Tournament

Lafayette, La. - Competing against a field that included 10 of the nation's top 100 teams, the University of Houston men's golf team couldn't overcome a slow start and registered a 14th-place finish at the Louisiana Classics on Monday and Tuesday.
Playing on the 7,002-yard, par 72 Oakbourne Country Club course, the Cougars didn't have more than one player to shoot below par in the final two rounds and no player breaking par in the first. Todd Bissenden shot a two-over par, 74, for Houston's best individual score in the first round. Jordan Irwin finished the opening round of the tournament at three-over-par, while Ricky Romano and Pablo Acuna both shot four over.
In the second round, Houston enjoyed its best team score of the tournament when the Cougars combined to shoot three-over-par, 291. Pablo Acuna had Houston's best individual score of two-under-par. Bissenden finished the second round at even par, and Ricky Romano had a score of one over. Steven Frazier had Houston's next-best score of four-over-par. Irwin finished the first day with a score of seven-over in the second round.
In the third round, the Cougars couldn't gain any ground on other teams as Irwin rebounded to shot a two-under par score of 70. Bissenden and Frazier each shot four over par for Houston's next best scores, while Acuna and Romano finished the third round at five over.
Southeastern Louisiana won the team championship after finishing the three rounds with a score of 13-under-par total of 851. The Lions edged Lamar by six strokes and Baylor by eight strokes.
Gary Woodland of Kansas was the individual champion with a three-round score of 11-under-par, 205. Patrick Nagle of Illinois was the runner-up, three strokes back.
