Volleyball Skid Hits Four

HOUSTON - The University of Houston volleyball dropped a five-game decision Friday night to the SMU Mustangs. The Cougars lost 2-3 with scores of 30-23, 24-30, 27-30, 30-28, 15-17 at the Athletics Alumni Center.
The Cougars (12-14, 7-8 C-USA) had three players with double-digit kills including junior Justine Farmer (20), sophomore Ashley Calhoun (11) and freshman Kinsey Cave (14). Farmer also paced Houston with 30 digs.
Houston dropped to 8-3 in the all-time series with the Mustangs and split two matches this season with SMU. UH had previously defeated SMU 3-0 in Dallas on Oct. 7.
The Cougars jumped out to the early 1-0 lead in the match behind Farmer and freshman Hannah Sullivan. The two combined for eight of the team's 14 digs in the game.
SMU responded winning games two and three to jump ahead 2-1 in the match. Houston was out hit .220 to .316 in game two but rebounded to hold SMU to a .044 hitting percentage in game three. In the two games there were 13 tie scores and six lead changes.
Houston evened the score by winning game four forcing just their seventh five-game match this season. UH is now 4-3 in five-game matches this season.
With one final change to win the match, Houston jumped out to a 13-8 lead before SMU went on a 7-1 run to tie the game 14-14. Houston would not be able to hold off the surging Mustangs. SMU went on to match Houston point for point before getting the win on two Houston attack errors.
The Mustangs were led by Caitlin Rainbird and Candice Davis who had 23 kills and 27 digs, respectively.
Houston will wrap-up the regular season on Sunday at 1pm with they play host to the Tulsa Golden Hurricane. Next week Houston will travel to Huntington, W. Va., for the Conference USA Volleyball Championships on the campus of Marshall University. A complete wrap-up of Sunday's match will be available at www.UHCougars.com.
