Volleyball Wins in Five in Regular Season Finale

HOUSTON -- In their second straight match, the University of Houston volleyball team played five games before defeating the Tulsa Golden Hurricane at the Athletics Alumni Center. Houston defeated Tulsa with scores of 30-24, 23-30, 26-30, 30-25 and 15-9.
Houston (13-14, 8-8 C-USA) was led by junior Justine Farmer's 28 kills and 23 digs.
In the final two regular season matches this weekend Calhoun has recorded at least 11 kills in each contest. The Neenah, Wisc., native set a career best 17 kills against Tulsa. Her previous best of 16 was set last season against Tennessee State.
Also setting a career best was freshman Amanda Carson. Carson had 35 digs replacing her previous best of 28 set against Rice on Sept. 27.
The Cougars move to 3-3 in the all-time series with the Golden Hurricane with today's win. Houston fell to Tulsa earlier this season, 3-0.
Houston opened the match winning game one. They went on a 12-2 run midway through the game to extend their lead, 24-15. During that stretch the Cougars notched eight kills with 22 kills on the game.
The Golden Hurricane evened the match winning game two, 30-23. The Cougars never led the game and Tulsa out hit UH .222 to .143. Freshman Lucy Charuk, in just her second match since sitting out 12 matches with an injury paced the Cougars with five kills in the game.
Houston used a 4-0 run late in game three to pull within one, 26-27 before Tulsa called a quick timeout. The Golden Hurricane came out of the break scoring three straight to deny the Cougars the win. Farmer and Calhoun each had five kills to lead the Cougars.
With one final chance to even the score, Houston used a .231 hitting percentage to win game four. Farmer had 10 kills and Calhoun had six to pace the Cougars.
UH jumped out to an early 6-0 lead in the final game of the match. They used the momentum to hold off a surging Tulsa team. Tulsa fell behind 10-3 before calling a timeout. They used the break to swing the momentum their way pulling within four, 12-8, but Houston was able to hold on for the win.
Tulsa was led in the match by Nicole Boyle and Fabiola Nepomuceno who recorded 22 digs and 22 kills, respectively.
Houston will travel to Huntington, W. Va. Tuesday for the Conference USA Volleyball Championship. The tournament beings on Nov. 15 and will conclude with the championship game at 6pm on Sunday, Nov. 18.
