HOUSTON -- The University of Houston volleyball team swept the Tulane Green Wave, 3-0, Friday night in their first home match since Sept. 23. Houston won with scores of 30-27, 31-29 and 30-26 at the Athletics/Alumni Center.
Houston (10-8, 5-2) was led in the match by junior Justine Farmer who notched 20 kills and 13 digs for her 11th double-double this season. Freshman Hannah Sullivan added 15 kills and eight digs.
"In the first game I thought we were really under control. In the second game we were a little shaky and in the third game it was kind of the same thing. We would be in and out of it and we lost our focus a little bit.
"I really thought we did a good job. Our serving was a little inconsistent because girls were serving and it was going out and they said they were hardly hitting it. That's when a player is playing uncomfortable. Otherwise I thought we played excellent," head coach Bill Walton said.
The Cougars jumped out to an early six-point lead in game one, 12-6, but Tulane used a couple of runs halfway through the game to cut the lead to two. Tulane would get within two, 27-25, before Houston called their first timeout. Out of the break, Houston would score three of the last five points to earn the win. Farmer led the Cougars with 10 kills on 17 attempts for a .471 hitting percentage. Farmer joined with freshman Hannah Sullivan's seven kills for 17 of the teams 21 kills in the game.
Game two would be a much closer match as neither team led by more than three points. At the halfway mark there were six ties and 14 for the game. Houston fell behind 27-28 and head coach Bill Walton called a timeout to calm his team. UH would once again use the break to their advantage scoring four of the last five points to jump out to a 2-0 lead in the match.
Sophomore Kinsey Cave added a game high .750 hitting percentage through two games. She had six kills on eight attempts with no errors. She would end the night with a career-high eight kills.
"We had Kinsey as a starter at the beginning of the year and she was a little shaky and she seemed to lose confidence but here recently we have gone to a 6-2 (offense) and she is getting a large number of sets and looks way more comfortable. That's what we expected out of her at the beginning of the year and now she is there so it's really good," Walton said.
The final game of the night seemed to be going in Tulane's favor but Houston battled back to tie the game 13-13. Houston would take the lead on the next point forcing the Green Wave to call a timeout. Once again Houston used the break to their advantage going on a 5-1 run to take a 19-15 lead. Tulane continued to fight back, tying the game 20-20 but it wasn't enough as the Cougars held on for the sweep.
The Cougars will conclude the weekend with a 1pm match against UTEP on Sunday. Live stats and live video streaming will be available for both matches by logging on to www.UHCougars.com. A complete wrap-up of the match will also be available following competition.
