BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - A goal by Jordan Godbolt (Austin, Texas/Travis HS) in the 60th minute gave the University of Houston soccer team a 1-0 win over UAB on Friday in Conference USA action at West Campus Field.
The Cougars (9-8, 3-4 C-USA) have won two-straight, earning their first win over UAB since the 2000 season. UH also won its first-ever game in Birmingham, having lost the previous three decisions.
UH, outshot by a 24-4 margin, took advantage of a corner kick that set up Godbolt's goal. The service ball found its way to Sarah Fisher (Katy, Texas/Cypress Springs HS) after bouncing around in the box. Fisher passed it to Godbolt's feet and the freshman put it into the back of the net.
Houston was largely on the defensive for the evening, mustering only four shots, with two of those on goal. The Cougars stuck to their game plan, limiting
UAB's speed up front and putting as many players in front of the ball as possible.
Goalkeeper Shelby Scott (Mesquite, Texas/North Mesquite HS) faced the brunt of the Blazers attack, with 24 shots coming in her direction. Seven of those were on goal, and Scott snagged all seven for her fifth clean sheet of the year. Scott has tied Robin Cate's single-season record of five shutouts, set in 2001. Cate (2000-01) also holds the career shutouts mark with eight.
The first half was all UAB, with the Blazers keeping the ball in their possession the majority of the half and out-shooting the Cougars, 14-1. Despite the shot differential, UAB was unable to take advantage of its many opportunities as the game remained deadlocked at 0-0 going into halftime.
The Cougars came out on the offensive to start the second 45 minutes, pressuring UAB all over the field. UH got off a pair of shots and set up the corner kick which led to Godbolt's goal.
Following the goal, Houston played tough defense the rest of the match, and came away with the 1-0 victory.
Houston is back on the field Sunday, playing Memphis at 1 p.m. CDT in its last regular-season road match.
