EL PASO - The University of Houston volleyball team opened Conference USA action with a 3-0 defeat at the hands of UTEP (17-30, 17-30, 27-30) on Friday night at Memorial Gym.
It was the first match for the Cougars (5-8, 0-1 C-USA) in 15 days due to Hurricane Rita, which cancelled all three matches for Houston last week.
Becca Sartori paced the Houston attack with 11 kills and five blocks, while Kariny Ritter added 10 kills to go along with nine digs. The UTEP defense forced 28 attack errors, and held the Cougars to a season-low 0.077 attack percentage.
On defense, Jaci Gonzalez and Justine Farmer picked up 17 digs apiece. Gonzlalez is now seven digs away from tying the C-USA record.
UTEP (11-4, 1-2 C-USA) controlled the match from start to finish charging out to early advantages in all three games. The Cougars held only one lead the entire evening, 1-0 in game three.
Katie Smith led the Minors dishing out 44 assists allowing Kari Stacy and Brooke Peugh to attack close to a .400 hitting percentage. Stacy popped 23 kills with only four errors, whereas Peugh chipped in 13 kills of her own committing just three errors.
Houston gets back to action on Sunday afternoon against Tulane on the Texas A&M campus. First serve is slated for 1pm.
Cougar Bytes
The start of the match was delayed 30 minutes waiting for the head official ... The Cougars have now lost three consecutive matches, and fall to 1-4 in three-game matches this season... Friday was the first meeting between these two Lone Star State schools since 1988 ... With the loss, Houston still has a 2-1 edge in the all-time series ... The match for Justine Farmer was a homecoming where she was named 2004 El Paso Times Player of the Year ... Farmer had her double-double streak snapped at four matches ... Kariny Ritter has knocked double-digit kills in 12 of 13 matches, while Becca Sartori has reached that feat in 11 of 13 matches ... Ritter is the first Cougar to surpass 200 kills for the season ... Sartori is now 57 block assists from breaking into the Top 10 all-time ... Jaci Gonzalez totaled 17 digs, and is now eight digs away from capturing the Conference USA record ... Gonzalez also went over the 300-dig mark for the season.
