HOUSTON - The University of Houston volleyball team capped a 2-0 day with a four game victory (30-16, 30-28, 28-30, 30-20) over former Southwest Conference rival, Texas Tech, on Saturday night in front of 462 fans at the Athletics/Alumni Center.
The Cougars claim the tournament crown as the lone undefeated team during the Saturday tournament.
For the second consecutive match, the Cougars totaled four players in double-digit kills.
"I was proud of the way our team responded today," head coach Bill Walton said. "Jen (Hohl) did a fantastic job of distrubiting the volleyball, and keeping everyone involved."
Spearheading the Houston attack was Kelly McAnelly and Kariny Ritter powering home 18 and 15 kills, respectively. Becca Sartori knocked down 11 kills, while Justine Farmer smacked 10 kills and 19 digs of her own.
Gonzalez ruled the back row pulling out 35 digs. The San Antonio native registered 89 digs over the weekend at an amazing 8.09 digs per game.
Hohl finished pumping out a match-high 53 assists, and also contributed seven digs. The senior setter finished the weekend dishing out 112 assists for the weekend.
"I get satisfaction as a setter when I see all of my teammates doing well," Hohl said. "Today we brought a lot of intensity after working out some of the kinks yesterday."
Houston (2-1) charged out of the gates steamrolling the Red Raiders (0-2) in the first game, 30-16. McAnelly and Ritter each ripped five kills on eight attempts in the opening frame.
Game two was a closer affair as the two squades traded the lead eight times. With the score tied at 25, UH took the lead for good forcing a Red Raider attack error.
After getting two kills from McAnelly, and one from Sartori, Hohl finished the game in style with an ace giving the Cougars a 30-28 victory.
The Red Raiders turned up the defense holding UH to a 0.089 attack percentage taking game three, 30-28.
"After taking a two game lead, the girls kind of got in camp mode," Walton said. "You're climbing Mount Everest, and all of the sudden you think you reached the summitt. We pitched our tents, but were able to pack up quickly reseting the tempo in the next game."
Houston answered grabbing 11 of the first 17 points in game four cruising to a 30-20 win.
The Cougars return to the hardwood next weekend hosting the Houston Invitational. UH opens play against Ole Miss. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. on Friday night. Houston squares off against Arkansas State and Miami on Saturday.
Individual tickets can be purchased for $5. UH students get in free showing their Cougar 1Card.
